Lee Pullen Science Communication

Explore the work of Bristol-based science writer, photographer, and creator of Urban Astrophotography, Lee Pullen.

About Lee

Lee Pullen is a science writer and communicator from Bristol, UK, with a degree in Astronomy and a Master’s in Science Communication. He began his career writing for NASA, the European Southern Observatory, and the Hubble European Space Agency Information Centre, and became Staff Writer for the International Year of Astronomy 2009, the world’s largest ever science outreach initiative.

Alongside freelance writing, Lee spent ten years at the science centre We The Curious, where he ran the planetarium and oversaw its upgrade to fulldome digital 3D—the first of its kind in the UK. He was President of the British Association of Planetaria from 2017 to 2019.

He then returned his focus to freelance work, producing content for the European Space Agency’s Kids and Education websites and scripts for Science Office projects. His experience spans articles, editing, video scripts, planetarium shows, and presenter training.

Lee also runs Urban Astrophotography, bringing together his interests in astronomy, photography, and public engagement. Through his own deep-sky images, practical guides, and equipment reviews, he shares how to photograph the Universe from a light-polluted city. Alongside this, he runs a professional photography business.

Planetarium

Bringing the wonders of the cosmos to life under the dome.

Lee’s planetarium work began at university, taking an inflatable planetarium into schools. He went on to manage the planetarium at At-Bristol, now We The Curious, helping to deliver its upgrade to 4K 3D and training more than 100 presenters.

He has written shows on stargazing, the Solar System, sustainability and astrobiology, with an estimated two million people having seen planetarium shows written by Lee.

Alongside his work at We The Curious, Lee produced shows for The Look Out Discovery Centre, Generation Science and the Abu Dhabi Science Festival.

He was President of the British Association of Planetaria from 2017 to 2019, and has trained presenters at the ESO Supernova planetarium in Munich.
